1. Sharpening Speed Skates with the Sharp Master

1.1 What type of skates can be sharpened with the Sharp Master?

The Sharp Master can be used to sharpen Nordic speed skates, both long track and short track. Please note that the Sharp Master is not suitable for sharpening figure skates and hockey skates.

1.2 Do I require technical skills to sharpen blades with the Sharp Master?

No, not at all. Whereas the traditional way of sharpening on a jig requires skill and experience, literally anyone can sharpen his or her skate blades with the Sharp Master and achieve professional results.

1.3 How does it work?

When using the Sharp Master, each skate is sharpened in turn.

  • Position the Sharp Master over the skate blade from behind.
  • Draw the Sharp Master across the blade from front to back about ten times.
  • At the last stroke, clamp the two deburring plates against the front of the blade: they will remove the burr.

When using different grinding plates, repeat the procedure for each of the plates. Start with the coarsest plate and finish with the finest. In the case of very dull or damaged skate blades, for example, you would start sharpening with the coarse (black) plate, and finish with the standard (blue) plate.

With your Sharp Master you will also receive a short manual.
You can also download the same manual right here on our website.

1.4 How long does it take to sharpen ice skates with the Sharp Master?

If your skates are not too dull, sharpening and deburring your blades will take no more than a few minutes. If your skates are on the dull side, the process will take 5 to 10 minutes.

1.5 Which grinding plates should I order with the Sharp Master?

For the average recreational skater, we recommend the standard grit (blue) grinding plate, complemented with the fine (red) grinding plate. The extra fine (green) grinding plate is a favourite of speed skaters who strive to achieve maximum results by making their skates glide even better by means of extra fine sharpening. The coarse (black) plate is suitable for rough grinding very dull skates or slightly damaged blades; the standard blue plate and possibly the finer red and green plates can be used for finishing afterwards.

Grinding plates can be ordered separately from this website. For customers abroad we recommend to purchase one or two extra grinding plates as shipping costs from The Netherlands to foreign destinations are unfortunately relatively high.
